The best bass amp and bass DI plugins
For free, go to TONE3000 and load captures of real bass amps and DIs into the free NAM plugin; Ignite's SHB-1 is a solid free amp too. For a SansAmp sound, Nembrini or Kuassa Bass Driver. For Ampeg, the SVT-VR. For modern metal bass, Darkglass Ultimate or Parallax X. If you want one bass to sound like a whole band, that is La Bestia.
Bass tone is mostly three decisions: a clean DI or an amp, how much grit, and how much of the low end you protect from that grit. Every plugin here answers those differently. The free options are genuinely good now, so start there.

TONE3000 is the best free resource for bass tone. Search it for SVT, SansAmp, Darkglass or whatever rig you are after, download the capture, and load it in the free Neural Amp Modeler plugin. Ignite's SHB-1 is a good free amp if you would rather have knobs than captures.
A SansAmp-style DI
The Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver is on a huge number of records, and plugins built around it are the quickest way to a finished, slightly gritty bass. Nembrini Bass Driver and Kuassa Efektor Bass Driver both go after that sound.
Ampeg, Darkglass and metal bass
For classic rock and the 8x10 sound, the Ampeg SVT-VR. For modern, aggressive and metal bass, Darkglass Ultimate or Parallax X, which split the low band from the distorted mids and highs so the bottom stays solid.
One bass as a whole band
La Bestia is not a DI or an amp sim. It runs a bass rig and a fuzzed guitar rig at the same time, so a bass alone sounds like bass plus guitar: the Royal Blood and Death From Above 1979 sound.
