Reverb before fuzz, or fuzz before reverb?
Swap two pedals in your chain and you can turn a clean amp into a completely different instrument. The order of your effects is not a detail. For fuzz and reverb in particular, it is the whole ballgame.
Why the order matters at all
Here is the thing nobody tells you when you start plugging pedals together: each effect does not just add its own flavor on top of the last one. It reacts to whatever is coming into it. The signal is a chain of arguments, and every link answers the one before it. A fuzz does not know or care whether it is chewing on a clean guitar or a big washy reverb tail. It just distorts whatever shows up at its input. So if you feed it a clean note, you get a distorted note. If you feed it a cloud of reverb, you get a distorted cloud. Same pedal, totally different result.
That is the mental model I want you to carry through the rest of this piece. Effects are not toppings. They are functions, and the output of one becomes the input of the next. Fuzz is the loudest, most opinionated function in the whole chain, which is exactly why moving it around changes everything downstream and upstream of it.
Distortion also behaves differently depending on how loud and how complex its input is. A single clean note pushes a fuzz into a fairly predictable clip. Two notes at once, or a note plus a long reverb tail, and the fuzz has to distort all of that together at the same time. That produces intermodulation, which is a fancy word for the new frequencies that show up when you distort more than one thing at once. It can sound gorgeous or it can sound like mud. Order decides which.
The conventional pedal order, and why it exists
There is a standard chain that most players land on, and it is worth knowing before you break it. Roughly, signal flows like this: tuner first, then dynamics like a compressor, then pitch effects like an octave or a synth pedal, then your drive and fuzz, then modulation like chorus, phaser, or tremolo, then delay, then reverb last, closest to the amp.
The logic is mostly practical. You put the tuner first so it reads a clean, strong pitch before anything smears it. You put pitch tracking early for the same reason, because octave pedals and pitch shifters need a clear fundamental to lock onto. You put dynamics early so the compressor is squashing your actual playing, not a wall of effects. Then comes the drive and fuzz, shaping your core tone. After that you place the time-based effects, modulation and delay and reverb, so that they act on your finished distorted sound rather than getting run through the distortion themselves.
That last part is the key idea. In the conventional order, reverb comes after fuzz. Your distorted guitar goes into the reverb, and the reverb adds space around it. That is the sound of a fuzzed-out guitar in a room. It is a great sound. Most records you love use exactly this arrangement, and you should be comfortable with it before you go looking for trouble.
Fuzz into reverb: a distorted guitar in a room
Let me describe the conventional version in plain terms, because the contrast is the whole point. When you run fuzz first and reverb second, the fuzz does its thing on your dry guitar, clipping the note into that thick, saturated tone. Then the reverb takes that already-distorted signal and pours ambience around it. The distortion stays crisp and defined because it happened before the space was added. The reverb sits behind the guitar like a room the guitar is playing in.
You hear the pick attack, you hear the note, and you hear the tail trailing off into the distance. The reverb is decoration. It is atmosphere hung on the walls around a solid, clearly-defined distorted tone. This is what doom and stoner players usually want, a huge riff with air around it but never losing the edge of the note. Listen to how Electric Wizard keeps those slow, crushing riffs legible even when everything is drowning in fuzz and volume. The distortion stays in front. The space stays behind. That separation is a feature.
Reverb into fuzz: the wash becomes the tone
Now flip it. Put the reverb first and the fuzz second. This is where things get strange and beautiful.
Now the reverb generates a big smeared cloud of ambience off your guitar, and then the fuzz distorts that entire cloud. The tail is no longer decoration sitting behind the note. The tail is now raw material for the distortion. The fuzz clips the reverb bloom itself, and the whole thing swells into a single dense sheet of sound where you can barely tell where the note ends and the ambience begins. The reverb stops being an effect on your tone and basically becomes your tone.
This is the shoegaze wall. It is the reason a band like My Bloody Valentine sounds like a jet engine made of guitars instead of a bunch of separate distorted parts. When the reverb feeds the fuzz, every note blooms outward and dissolves into the next one. Chords lose their hard edges and turn into weather. It is less like hearing a guitar and more like standing inside one.
There is a physical reason it sounds so different. A dry note has a sharp attack and then decays. A reverb tail is the opposite shape, it swells and sustains. When you distort a swelling, sustaining signal, the fuzz stays saturated for far longer than it would on a plucked note, so the distortion never really lets go. That continuous saturation is what gives the shoegaze wall its endless, oceanic quality. You also get all that intermodulation I mentioned earlier, because the fuzz is chewing on a dense stew of frequencies from the reverb all at once. That is the grit and shimmer riding on top of the wash.
It is worth saying this trick is not exclusive to shoegaze. Plenty of heavy and atmospheric music leans on distorted ambience to blur the line between riff and drone. The way Deafheaven builds those blinding, tremolo-picked passages relies on exactly this kind of saturated, blooming space where the reverb and the distortion have fused into one texture rather than sitting in separate lanes.
Where the delay goes
Delay is the other time-based effect worth thinking about carefully, and it usually wants to go before the reverb and after your drive, though this is softer than a rule. Delay before reverb means you get distinct repeats, each one then washed with a little ambience, and everything stays fairly clean and legible. This is the standard, and it is what you want most of the time.
Delay after reverb, or delay feeding into fuzz, gets you into the same territory as the reverb-into-fuzz trick. If you put a delay early and then distort its repeats, each echo gets fuzzed and the repeats pile into a rhythmic, self-feeding drone. That can be incredible for ambient and drone playing, and it can also run away from you fast, so ride your feedback knob. The general instinct is the same one running through this whole article: distortion in front of a time effect keeps things clean and defined, distortion behind a time effect smears everything into texture. Neither is correct. They are just two different instruments.
Modulation, and a note on rules
Modulation, meaning chorus, phaser, flanger, and tremolo, conventionally sits between your fuzz and your delay. Chorus after fuzz thickens and widens the distorted tone without muddying it. But you can absolutely put a phaser before the fuzz and let the distortion react to the sweep, which gives you that gnarly, breathing, animated quality on the front edge of the tone. Once again, before the fuzz means the effect drives the distortion, after the fuzz means the effect decorates it.
Practical rules of thumb
Here is what I actually keep in my head:
- Effects react to their input. Whatever sits in front of the fuzz becomes the thing the fuzz distorts. That single idea explains almost every ordering question you will ever have.
- Distortion in front of a time effect stays clean and defined. This is the conventional, safe, records-you-love arrangement. Start here.
- Distortion behind a time effect turns that effect into your tone. Reverb into fuzz is the wall. Delay into fuzz is the drone. Use it on purpose.
- Watch your gain and feedback. Feeding big blooming signals into a fuzz can get loud and unstable in a hurry. Pull back input levels and reverb mix when you are experimenting.
- Use your ears, not the diagram. The standard order exists because it works, not because it is law. Every wall of sound you admire came from someone ignoring it.
