How to get a doom metal guitar tone
The first time I tried to sound heavy, I did the obvious thing and turned everything up. More gain, more volume, scoop the mids, drop the tuning through the floor. What I got was a thin, buzzy mess that disappeared the second the drums came in. Heavy is not the same as loud, and it is definitely not the same as distorted. This is the guide I wish someone had handed me back then.
Why piling on distortion actually thins your low end
Here is the thing nobody tells you when you buy your first fuzz pedal. Distortion does not add low end. In a lot of cases it takes it away. When you clip a signal hard, you generate a whole stack of upper harmonics, and those harmonics pile up in the middle and top of the spectrum. The fundamental, the actual low note you are playing, gets crowded out. Your ears hear all that harmonic fizz and read it as aggression, but the weight, the thing that moves air, is quietly getting eaten.
You can watch this happen on a spectrum analyzer if you want to make yourself sad. Play a low open note clean, look at where the energy sits, then kick on a ton of gain and watch the low peak shrink while everything above it lights up. This is why a wall of gain so often sounds smaller than a moderate amount. The trick to heavy is not stacking distortion until it screams. It is finding the point where you have grit and body at the same time, and knowing that those two things are pulling against each other the whole way.
Keep a clean-ish floor under the filth
The single biggest lesson I have taken from studying the records I love is that the heaviest tones almost always have something clean underneath. Not clean like a jazz tone, just an uncontaminated layer of low fundamental that the distortion never touches. That clean floor is what makes the note feel like it has a body attached to it instead of just a cloud of buzz.
Old Black Sabbath records are the reference point here for good reason. Tony Iommi was not running impossible amounts of gain. By modern standards those tones are almost polite. But the notes have mass because the low end is intact and the distortion is sitting on top of it rather than replacing it. Producers get to the same place a lot of different ways. One common approach documented in plenty of studio interviews is splitting the signal so a clean or lightly driven path carries the lows while a filthy path carries the character, then blending the two. You do not always need two amps to think this way. You just need to protect the bottom from the fuzz.
Heavy lives around 400 Hz to 1 kHz, not in the sub
This one surprises people. When you feel a guitar as heavy, the frequency range doing most of the work is not the sub-bass. It is the low mids and mids, roughly 400 Hz up to around 1 kHz. That is where the growl and the chest-punch of a riff actually sit. The very lowest frequencies mostly belong to the kick and bass, and if your guitar tries to compete down there it just turns everything to mud.
This is the exact opposite of the instinct most beginners have, which is to scoop the mids into a smiley face because it sounds huge alone in the bedroom. Solo, a scooped tone is impressive. In a mix it vanishes, because you carved out the one region that lets a guitar cut and feel weighty at the same time. Listen to how a band like Sleep gets that enormous, rolling, worshipful heaviness. It is not a scooped tone. It is thick in the mids, and that is why the riffs feel like they have physical weight. Electric Wizard lean even further into a fuzzed, midrange-forward filth that would be unbearable if it were scooped out. If you take one mixing idea from this whole guide, let it be this: stop scooping and start trusting the mids.
Down-tuning, and how low is too low
Tuning down is part of the doom vocabulary, and it does real things. Lower tuning gives you slacker strings, a looser and more physical feel under the fingers, and of course lower fundamentals. Drop D, C standard, B, and lower all show up across the genre depending on the band and the era. There is no single correct tuning, and chasing the lowest possible one is a trap.
The problem with going too low is twofold. First, slack strings get floppy and hard to keep in tune, and the attack turns to a formless flub instead of a note. Second, remember the low-end problem from earlier. The lower you tune, the more your fundamental sits in a range that distortion is going to bury and that your bass and kick already occupy. A lot of the most crushing doom is not tuned as low as people assume. It is tuned down a bit, played with intent, and mixed so the low mids carry the weight. If you are switching to heavier gauge strings when you drop, which you should, that alone will do more for your tone than another whole step down. Tune to what stays tight and speaks clearly, not to what looks impressive on paper.
Play slow, and leave space
Tone is only half of it. The other half is what you play and how much air you leave around it. Doom is slow on purpose. When a riff moves slowly and the notes ring out, every bit of that weight and sustain has room to develop and land. Cram the same riff full of fast notes and the heaviness evaporates, because nothing has time to breathe.
Space is an instrument. The Melvins built a huge part of their identity on dragging tempos down until a single chord becomes an event, and that patience is a big reason those records feel so heavy. Boris take the same idea and stretch it in every direction across their catalog, from crawling drone to sudden weight. The lesson is the same. A note you can hear decay fully reads as heavier than three notes stacked on top of each other. When you are writing or tracking doom, ask yourself where you can take notes out, not where you can add them.
Feedback, sustain, and letting the note live
Sustain is the payoff for all of this. When your low end is intact, your mids are present, and you are playing slow enough to let a note ring, that note keeps developing after you strike it. Push it a little further and you get controlled feedback, where the amp and the guitar start feeding each other and the note refuses to die. That is the sound of a rig that is alive.
The far end of this idea is a project like Sunn O))), where the note more or less is the entire song. Massive volume, massive sustain, feedback treated as the point rather than an accident. You do not have to go that far to use the principle. Even in a conventional riff, learning to hear when a note wants to bloom into feedback and leaning into it instead of choking it off is a huge part of sounding heavy. This is also where playing at real volume matters, since a lot of that interaction between guitar and amp only shows up when the room is moving.
Putting it together
So the honest recipe is not what the beginner in me assumed. It is a moderate, well-behaved amount of distortion instead of a wall of it. A clean low fundamental kept underneath the grit so notes have a body. Mids left in, not scooped, because that is where heavy actually lives. A sensible tuning with strings heavy enough to stay tight. Slow playing with real space between notes. And enough volume and intent to let sustain and feedback do their work. Everything on that list is fighting the natural instinct to just turn it all up, which is exactly why it took me years to learn.
