The best free lo-fi plugins
You can build a complete lo-fi chain for $0: Memory Station for the overall haze, iZotope Vinyl for crackle, Tape Cassette 2 or Chow Tape for tape warmth, and Kilohearts Bitcrush for grit. All work in FL Studio, Ableton and Reaper; Logic needs the AU versions, which all of these have.
Lo-fi is mostly four kinds of damage: noise (crackle, hiss), wobble (wow and flutter), loss (rolled-off highs, low bit depth) and haze (chorus, filtering, a little reverb). Every plugin below handles one or more of those, and every one of them is genuinely free, not a time-limited demo.
I make Siesta Audio plugins, and one of mine is on this list, marked as mine. Everything else is here because people actually recommend it. Prices are list prices from each developer's site as of 2026 and change often, so check before you buy.

A free lo-fi chain, in order
Put these on your beat or loop, top to bottom
- Tape first. Tape Cassette 2 or Chow Tape Model, gently. You want warmth and a little wobble, not a broken machine.
- Crunch, lightly. Kilohearts Bitcrush, mixed low. Lo-fi is softer than people think; a little sample-rate loss goes a long way.
- The haze. Memory Station. Pick a mood and it adds the fog, chorus and float that make a loop feel remembered rather than recorded.
- Crackle last. iZotope Vinyl on top, so the noise sits outside the haze the way it would on a real record.
If that is too many plugins, Memory Station alone gets you a finished-sounding loop in one move. That is the reason I built it: lo-fi is a feeling, and most people do not want to spend an evening balancing four plugins to get to it.
In FL Studio, Logic and Ableton
- FL Studio: use the VST3 versions. Put the chain on the mixer insert for your sample or on the master for a whole-beat treatment.
- Logic Pro: Logic only loads AU. Every plugin here ships an AU, so you are covered. Memory Station is a universal binary, so it runs natively on Apple Silicon.
- Ableton Live: VST3 or AU both work. Drop the chain into an Audio Effect Rack so you can switch the whole lo-fi treatment on and off with one macro.
- Linux (Bitwig, Reaper): Memory Station and Chow Tape Model both run natively.
Want a paid upgrade later?
The plugin most people graduate to is XLN's RC-20. I wrote up RC-20 and its alternatives, free and paid, so you can decide whether the $99 is worth it for how you work. For the sound itself, see J Dilla, Nujabes and lo-fi hip hop.
Quick answers
What is the best free lo-fi plugin?
For an all-in-one haze from a single preset, Memory Station. For crackle, iZotope Vinyl. For tape warmth, Tape Cassette 2 or Chow Tape Model.
What free lo-fi plugins work in Logic Pro?
All of the plugins on this list ship AU versions, which is the format Logic uses: Memory Station, iZotope Vinyl, Tape Cassette 2, Chow Tape Model, BPB Dirty VHS and Kilohearts Essentials.
What free lo-fi plugins work in FL Studio?
All of them, using the VST3 versions.
Do I need a lo-fi plugin to make lo-fi music?
No. You can get there with a lowpass filter, a little saturation and some vinyl noise. Lo-fi plugins just get you there faster and more consistently.
