The lo-fi sound, explained
People talk about lo-fi like it is one effect you switch on. It is not. It is a small pile of imperfections that used to happen to recordings by accident, and now we add them back on purpose. Once you can hear the parts separately, you can build the feeling yourself instead of hunting for a preset that gets you close.
I have spent a lot of years making records the normal way, chasing clarity and headroom and a clean top end. Lo-fi is the opposite instinct. It is a bet that a little damage makes a recording feel more human, more remembered, more like something you found rather than something you bought. The trick is that the damage has to be the right kind, and there has to be less of it than you think. Below is how I break it down when I am building the sound from scratch.
Tape wow and flutter
Start with pitch. A brand new digital recording holds a note dead still. Tape never did. The reel dragged, the motor was not perfect, the pinch roller wore down, and the pitch wandered by tiny amounts the whole time it played. Slow drift is called wow. Faster jitter is called flutter. You do not consciously hear either one as an out-of-tune note. You hear it as a recording that breathes, that feels physical, that sounds like it lives on an object instead of in a file.
This is the single most important ingredient, and it is the one people skip because it is invisible. If you want to understand why, listen to Boards of Canada, who built a whole catalog on detuned, sun-faded synths that sag and sway like an old home video. That queasy nostalgic feeling is mostly pitch instability. A gentle, slow warble is warm. A fast, deep one gets seasick fast, so keep the depth low and let it wander.
Filtering the top
Modern recordings are bright. They reach up past the range most instruments actually use because we like the air and the sparkle. Old ones did not. Tape, cheap microphones, vinyl, radio, and worn-out cassettes all rolled the high end off, some of it early and hard. When you pull the top down, a recording stops feeling like it is happening in front of your face and starts feeling like it is happening in another room, or on another day.
Practically, this means a low-pass filter, and a more aggressive one than feels comfortable at first. J Dilla is the reference here. His drums are famously dark and thick, sampled from old records and left dusty on purpose, and that darkness is a huge part of why the beats feel so heavy and so unbothered. Rolling off the highs also hides digital harshness, which is convenient, because the next few ingredients can get harsh if you let them.
Noise and hiss
Silence is a modern invention. Analog gear was never quiet. There was tape hiss, the electrical hum of the room, the surface noise of vinyl, the faint texture of the medium itself sitting underneath everything. We spent decades trying to get rid of it. Lo-fi puts it back, because that low bed of noise tells your ear the recording is real and physical, and it glues separate elements together into one continuous thing.
A little goes a long way. You want it felt more than heard, a soft floor under the music rather than a layer on top of it. Vinyl crackle, tape hiss, the hum of a room, a distant field recording of rain or a cafe, all of these do the same job. This is a big part of the lo-fi hip hop sound that people study to, where the crackle and the room tone are as much a part of the track as the piano. The noise is not a mistake anymore. It is the frame.
Bitcrush and saturation
Now we bruise the signal itself. Two related tools here, and they do different jobs. Saturation is the warm one. It is what happens when you push analog gear a little too hard, and it adds harmonics that make a sound feel fuller, rounder, and a touch fuzzy. Almost every record you love has some of it. On lo-fi you lean in harder than you would on a clean mix, until things start to feel glued and slightly overdriven.
Bitcrushing is the harsh cousin. It throws away resolution, the way an old sampler or a cheap toy would, and it leaves a grainy, gritty edge on the sound. Used heavily it is an obvious effect. Used gently, just a whisper of it, it adds a digital crumble that pairs beautifully with the analog warmth of saturation. The producers who chase this feeling, Nujabes among them, tend to reach for the warm end, letting the samples sound soft and slightly worn rather than digitally shredded. Add saturation first, then bitcrush in tiny amounts, and pull back the moment it starts to sound like a broken speaker.
Blurry reverb
Clean reverb tells you exactly where you are. A big bright hall, a tight plate, a specific room. Lo-fi reverb does the opposite. It smears everything into an undefined, hazy distance so you cannot quite tell where the sound is coming from. It is less like a room and more like a memory of a room. You filter it dark, keep it a little washed out, and let it blur the edges of every note instead of framing them.
This is where the sound gets emotional. Grouper makes records where the voice and guitar are so drowned in soft, dark reverb that they feel like they are dissolving as you listen, and it is devastating precisely because you cannot hold onto the detail. On the club side, Burial uses cavernous, rainy reverb to make garage tracks sound like they are echoing up out of an empty city at night. Same tool, different weather. Roll the highs off the reverb, let the tail bleed into the noise floor, and the whole thing starts to feel like it is underwater or half-remembered.
Restraint, which is the hard part
Here is the ingredient nobody lists, and it is the one that separates a lo-fi record from a broken one. Restraint. Every effect above is destructive. Each one throws away something, and if you stack them all at full strength you get mud, an unlistenable smear where nothing has weight and everything fights. The skill is not turning the knobs up. It is knowing how far down to keep them.
The recordings that last are usually gentler than you would guess. There is real music underneath, a good chord, a real melody, a groove that would work dry, and the degradation is a thin coat of weather over the top of something solid. When I am building this sound I get everything sitting right clean first, then I add the damage last, one ingredient at a time, and I stop early. If you can still clearly hear the song, you have probably done it right. If the effects are the most interesting thing in the track, you have gone too far.
Where it came from
None of this started as a genre. It started as limitations. People made records on the gear they could afford, cassette four-tracks and worn samplers and second-hand tape, and the sound of that gear got baked into music we still love. The instability, the darkness, the hiss, the grit, and the wash were not choices. They were just what the machines did. What changed is that a generation grew up hearing those artifacts as the sound of warmth and memory, and started adding them back on purpose long after the machines were gone.
So when you build lo-fi now, you are really doing an impression of old technology, and the more you understand what that technology actually did, the more convincing the impression gets. Learn the ingredients separately and you stop guessing. You can decide you want more pitch drift and less noise, or a darker filter and almost no crush, and dial the exact feeling you are after instead of hoping a preset lands near it.
